Matthew is a science filmmaker based in Washington, DC, but he grew up in Harrisburg, PA.   He graduated with a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Delaware in 1996, and spent a year taking classes at Cornell University.   Moving on to the graduate program at Princeton University, he received his M.A. in Chemistry in 1999.   Matthew spent the next three years working towards his doctorate in physical chemistry with Giacinto Scoles and Kevin Lehmann.       The siren song of the silver screen called to him, so he moved to Montana and in 2006 earned a Master of Fine Arts degree in Science and Natural History Filmmaking from Montana State University.   For his thesis, Matthew focused on the creative process in science and its parallels with art.   His short movie, The Poetic Element (2005, 8 minutes), won “Best Editing” at the first Element Film Festival in Bozeman, MT.       Now the sole proprietor of Paignton Pictures, a multimedia production company, Matthew specializes in creating long- and short-form science documentaries and educational websites.   His 2008 documentary on the Great Lakes Compact, Inland Seas (2008, 50 minutes), won a “Merit Award for Educational Value” from the 5th Montana CINE film festival and played on Milwaukee PBS. |
